A/an & the
Mr B: There is a pencil and
a book on my desk. The pencil is black.
Mr C: I see.
Mr B says "a pencil" because it's the first
time he talks about it. Then he says "the
pencil" because Mr C knows which pencil he's talking
about - the pencil on his desk.
When the listener doesn't know which thing you
are talking about, use a/an. When the listener
knows, use the.
Examples:
I have a book. We don't know which
book.
I have the book you gave me. We know
which book.
Sometimes it's clear which thing you are talking
about even though it's the first time you mention
it.
Examples:
Please shut the door. It's the door
in this room.
The music is too loud. It's the music
we can hear.
